What is Galvanized Aluminum Magnesium?
Galvanized aluminum magnesium (often branded as Galvalume™ or ZAM®) is a coated steel product, not aluminum. It consists of a steel sheet coated with an alloy of zinc (Zn), aluminum (Al), and magnesium (Mg). This advanced coating provides significantly improved corrosion resistance compared to traditional galvanisation, which uses only zinc.
Common Composition:
- Zinc (Zn): ~90–95%
- Aluminum (Al): ~5–11%
- Magnesium (Mg): ~1–3%
Key Features
- Exceptional corrosion resistance — highly effective against salt spray and marine or industrial environments.
- Self-healing properties — magnesium slows rusting at scratches or cut edges.
- Extended lifespan — outperforms traditional galvanized or Zn-Al coated steel.
- Workability — easy to cut, bend, stamp, or weld.

Additional Building Information:
In some cases, a building or resource consent may be needed. Building work related to porches and verandas up to 20 square meters generally does not require a building consent. However, it's important to note that local councils may have specific requirements or restrictions. We recommend checking with your local council authorities for further information and guidance before installation if needed. Especially for pergolas over 20 square metres or if you are considering building close to load-bearing walls.
